Sean has Ernesto accompany him to a party, and everyone assumes they're dating (Sean's last partner was also Hispanic).Р”Р„s the film moves forward, the potential minefields inherent in the situationР’В become more apparent, as does the skill that Butler uses to avoid them. Soon, they're hiking, hitting a health-food store and enjoying an afternoon boat ride (Ernesto insists that he row).

He enjoys their conversations, which consistР’В of Sean unloading a lot of emotional baggage and Ernesto, pleasantly ambivalent, going along. The job will take more than one day, so Ernesto returns. Hey,Р’В Ernesto needs to eat, right? So Sean picks up Vietnamese food from a place that's gotten great reviews on Yelp, and insists that Ernesto join him forР’В lunch. A thought occurs to Sean, who misses having someone to talk to. It makes the two men feel like theyРІР‚в„ўre on a level playing field, as least intellectually speaking.Р”Р‡or $20 an hour, Ernesto agrees to refinish and paint the deck. SeanРІР‚в„ўs Spanish isnРІР‚в„ўt much better a wise move on the part of writer-director John Butler. He selects Ernesto (Alejandro PatiР“В±o), a 50-something family man who knows a smattering of English words. What to do? Realizing that heРІР‚в„ўs not particularly handy, he decides to hire a day laborer from aР’В group of men who stand outside a hardware store, hoping for jobs. Needy and helpless, Sean still calls hisР’В voice mail, just to hear the outgoing message.Р”Р„fter the plant is moved, a large circle remains on his deckР’В where the pot rested ('a vicious circle,' Sean sighs).

That includes getting rid of a large potted plant, apparently the last remnant of his romance with Carlos. РІР‚СљAn intense case of acid reflux,РІР‚Сњ he tells his boss, attempting to downplayР’В the incident.Р”Р‡orced to take a few days off, he decides to focus on working around the house.

Matt Bomer plays Sean, a handsome Los Angeles weatherman who owns an expensive house with a great view. Funny, empathetic and tender, it pretty much sneaks up and catches you off-guard with its sly charms. The buddy comedy РІР‚СљPapi ChuloРІР‚Сњ could go wrong in all sorts of ways, so itРІР‚в„ўs kind of a minor miracle how much it actually gets right. The duo of Matt Boomer and Alejandro Patino are a perfect pair, with Boomer bringing a powerfully nuanced performance of raw emotion.Р”В®ven though it slightly loses direction during the concluding act of the film, Papi Chulo is a sweet film of friendship across the cultural divide.Watch Video: An unlikely relationship develops in 'Papi Chulo' However, in the third act the film stumbles slightly as the film fixates too heavily on Sean's internal struggle without Ernesto as a counter balance to that. The first couple of acts are thoroughlyР’В entertaining as Sean and Ernesto stumble across language and cultural barriers. Two people from opposite worlds thrown together and the effects, both good and bad, that they have on one another as that friendship blossoms.Р”Р„lthough weРІР‚в„ўve seen this idea play out before, the themes explored and the representation that it gives to those not often represented on film is not only welcomed but refreshing. The idea of Papi Chulo is a fairly familiar one. Despite a language barrier and having nothing in common, the two men develop an unexpected but profound friendship.

Even though Papi Chulo is a feel good film that follows a pretty beaten cinematic track, it's still thoroughly entertaining with all the warm and fuzzies you need.Р”Р„fter a newly-single TV weatherman is put on leave following an on-air meltdown, he directs his energy into home improvement and hires a middle-aged Latino day laborer named Ernesto to help.
